Rudolf Franz Johann Wegscheider (born October 8, 1859 in Großbetschkerek , Austrian Empire , † January 8, 1935 in Vienna ) was an Austrian chemist.

life and work

Rudolf Wegscheider was born as the son of the imperial district commissioner Johann Wegscheider and his wife Maria Plank. He studied chemistry and was one of the founders of physical chemistry in Austria. From 1902 to 1931 he held a chair in Vienna. He held office as chairman of the Association of Austrian Chemists from 1904 to 1929. He played a decisive role in the development of the theory of the speed of chemical reactions, reaction kinetics . He was buried at the Grinzinger Friedhof in an honorary grave (group 12, row 4, number 4).

In 1905 he was awarded the Lieben Prize .

In 1917 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and in 1918 of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and in 1932 a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1923 Wegscheider was awarded the Wilhelm Exner Medal for his work in the field of organic chemistry .

Appreciation

The Rudolf Wegscheider Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences bears his name.
