Hermann Rothe (born December 28, 1882 in Vienna , † December 18, 1923 there ) was an Austrian mathematician .

Rothe studied at the University of Vienna and the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1909 in Vienna as a doctor of technical sciences . He then worked as an assistant to Karl Zsigmondy at the Technical University of Vienna , where he completed his habilitation in 1910 . Rothe married in 1913 and taught mathematics at the Technical University as an associate professor , and from 1920 as a full professor. Rothe died in 1923 after a long illness.

He was buried at the Grinzing cemetery .

Rothe became known through his work (1910–1912) with Philipp Frank on the special theory of relativity , where the authors tried to derive the Lorentz transformation within the framework of group theory and without recourse to the postulate of the constancy of the speed of light .

In addition to his teaching activity, Rothe also dealt with Grassmann's theory of expansion .
