Ferdinand Maria Josef Welz (born April 18, 1915 in Vienna ; † June 1, 2008 there ) was director of the master school for medalists at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . He designed several motifs for the Schilling coins.

biography

Welz first completed an apprenticeship in engraving in Vienna. In 1933 he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and studied sculpture there . In 1938 he completed his academic training. In 1940 he became head of the engraving department in the main mint . After the Second World War he continued to work as a freelance artist and briefly moved to Sweden . In 1955 he was given a teaching position at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he directed the master school for medalists. 1970 to 1972 he became rector and from 1972 to 1976 he held the office of vice rector. In 1985 he retired , but took over the interim management of the master school until 1986.

Welz was best known for his work for the shilling currency. He designed the edelweiss on the 1 shilling coin and the woman with a gold cap for the 10 shilling coin. He also designed a number of commemorative coins , including for the centenary of Max Reinhardt and Franz Lehár . One of his last works was a coin on the occasion of the Pope's visit to Austria in 1988. Welz was buried at the Grinzinger Friedhof (group 29, row 6, number 7) in Vienna.
