Edwin Grienauer
Edwin Grienauer (born March 7, 1893 in Vienna ; † August 21, 1964 there ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .
Life
Edwin Grienauer is the son of the cellist Karl Grienauer and the opera singer Helene Schott. He studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts after creating his first portrait plaques at the age of 19. During the First World War he suffered a facial wound. In 1935 Grienauer was awarded the title of "Professor" and after 1945 taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. His studio was in the Vienna Prater . He died there in 1964.
The artist was an excellent rower and was Austrian champion in double sculls in 1927 . However, he did not receive Olympic medals as a rower, but in the art competition for medals and plaques (gold 1928 , Amsterdam ; bronze 1948 , London )
Works
Grienauer is particularly known for his coins ( signature : GRIENAUER; EG) and medals, but also created many sculptures that can still be seen in Vienna today. His coins were in circulation in Austria and Liechtenstein . The most famous works are:
- Value side of the one- shilling coin (in circulation from 1959 to 2002)
- Face of two-shilling coins , e.g. B. Schubert 1928, Billroth 1929, Mozart 1931, Haydn 1932, Dollfuß 1934, Savoy 1936
- Face of 5 Schilling coins 1934–36 and 100 Schilling coins 1935–38 Magna Mater Austriae
- Face and value sides of 25 Schilling coins : Mozart 1956, Mariazell 1957, Bruckner 1962, Savoyen 1963, Grillparzer 1964
- Face and value sides of 50 Schilling coins : Tiroler Freiheit 1959, Olympic Winter Games 1964
- Face and value sides of 25, 50 and 100 franc coins Liechtenstein 1952 Franz Joseph II and Gina von Liechtenstein
- Medal of the Chamber of Commerce "For loyal cooperation"
- Medal "For Services to the Republic of Austria"
- Saint Margaret and Sacred Heart statues in the Church of St. Othmar, Vienna ( 3rd district )
- Virgin Mary statue in the Church of St. Christoph, Baden near Vienna
- Relief at the Kunsthistorisches Museum , Vienna
- Tabernacle (in the archive) and floor tiles in St. Stephen's Cathedral , Vienna
- Carved crucifix in the Johannes Kapistran parish church in Vienna-Brigittenau, around 1960
A catalog raisonné by Grienauer was neither created during his lifetime nor after his death. It was not until 2003 that the Institute for Numismatics at the University of Vienna began processing Grienauer's estate. The institute manages a large part of the numismatic estate on permanent loan . In addition to medals and coins, this material also contains drawings, models and dies , which illustrate the stages in which medals are made and the various manufacturing techniques.
