This article looks at the history of Kosovo as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .

Kosovo has not yet participated in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), but since the declaration of independence in 2008, Kosovo has made unofficial efforts to participate in the ESC, most recently for the ESC 2019 . The reason for their failure was always the lack of membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

history

Kosovo declared itself independent from Serbia on February 17, 2008 and, according to its own statements, has so far recognized 114 of the 193 member states of the United Nations .

Since Kosovo is not a member of the European Broadcasting Union , it has not yet been able to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, singers from Kosovo have appeared for Albania several times .

The broadcaster RTK has been striving for admission to the EBU for several years in order to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. For this, Kosovo must either be a member of the Council of Europe or of the International Telecommunication Union . The latter requires membership in the United Nations.

In 2016 there was a rumor that Kosovo had been invited to the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest , which ultimately turned out to be a hoax.

The Kosovar state broadcaster RTK announced in 2017 that Kosovo would take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time if a country that has recognized the Republic of Kosovo as an independent state wins. Since Portugal recognized Kosovo, it was hoped that Kosovo would take part in the 2018 ESC . The EBU denied these reports.

The General Assembly of the EBU voted on June 28th on a motion submitted by Hungary , Croatia , Slovenia , Montenegro and North Macedonia to amend the EBU Statute. These changes would have allowed Kosovo to participate in the ESC. In one of 17 countries, including Greece , Cyprus , Serbia , Russia and Spain , requested secret ballots, this proposal was rejected by 673 votes against to 400 votes in favor, with a three-quarters majority of 889 votes required. As a result, Kosovo will not participate in the ESC in the foreseeable future.
