This article looks at the history of Morocco as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .
Regularity of participation and successes in competition
Morocco took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time and once only in 1980. However, this participation was not very successful. So the country only reached the penultimate place. In 1981 the country withdrew from the competition and has since refrained from participating.
To date, Morocco is the only Arab country that has ever participated in the Eurovision Song Contest. Two other Arab countries were about to take part, but withdrew: Lebanon entered the competition in 2005 with the singer Aline Lahoud and the title Quand tout s'enfuit . Even Tunisia signed up already at a song contest, namely the Euro Vision Song Contest 1977 . In both cases, however, the simultaneous participation of Israel was a reason for the later withdrawal.
Due to a possible cancellation by Israel in 2015, the Moroccan broadcaster 2MTV reported interest in the song contest and tried in vain to gain entry into the EBU . However, as Israel confirmed its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 , Morocco canceled its participation on October 31, 2014 and again stayed away from the competition. However, the country sent a delegation to the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna for observation. Since then, Morocco has not spoken out about participating and has not been on the list of participants every year.

National preliminary decisions
Morocco's only contribution to the Song Contest was selected internally. This makes Morocco the only country besides Monaco that has ever participated in the Song Contest and never held a national preliminary decision.
languages
Since Morocco only participated in 1980 and at that time the rule still existed that the respective country had to present its songs in the national language, Morocco sang in Arabic . This marked the first appearance of this language in the competition. In 2009 this language appeared again when Israel presented its song partly in Arabic and in 2019 when Italy presented a short part of the song "Soldi" in Arabic.
