This article deals with the history of Poland as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC).

Regularity of participation and successes in competition

Poland participated for the first time in 1994 and was able to set a record the first time it participated. At that time Edyta Górniak never got second place with her ballad To with 166 points. This was a country's most successful debut at the ESC at the time, and was only surpassed in 2007 when Serbia won the competition on its first participation. However, Poland could not continue this success in 1995 and only reached 18th place. In the following years it was only enough for placements in the midfield: 15th place (1996), 11th (1997), 17th place (1998) and 18th place (1999) . Due to these rather weaker placements, the country had to suspend for the first time in 2000. In 2001 Poland was allowed to participate again, but the return was unsuccessful, because the country only ended up in 20th place. Accordingly, the country had to suspend again in 2002. Poland was only able to participate again in 2003.

The return in 2003 was even successful. The band Ich Troje took 7th place with their song No Limits - Żadnych granic and thus Poland's second-best result in the competition. In 2004, the Polish contribution ended up in the midfield again with 17th place. In 2005, Poland had to take part in the semifinals introduced in 2004 for the first time, but narrowly missed the finals with 11th place. In 2005, when the band Ich Troje again competed for Poland, the country narrowly missed the final qualification with 11th place. The final was also missed in 2007, but with 14th place in the semifinals it was also more clearly than before. Only in 2008 was the country able to qualify for the final again after finishing tenth in the semifinals. In the end, Isis Gee only came second to last. In 2009 and 2010 Poland again missed the final with 12th place and 13th place in the semi-finals. In 2011, Poland's lowest point in competition followed. The country was last in the semi-finals and thus achieved its worst placement to date. Because of the focus on the European Football Championship in Poland and Ukraine and the Summer Olympics in London , both in 2012, the country did not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku . In 2013, too, Poland refrained from participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 for financial reasons . It wasn't until 2014 that the country returned to competition.

In 2014, the duo Donatan & Cleo entered, which reached 8th place in the semifinals and thus brought Poland back into the final for the first time in six years. In the final, the country achieved 14th place, the best result in eleven years. In 2015, too, Poland managed to qualify for the final, even if the placement with 23rd place was rather moderate in the end. In 2016, Poland qualified for the final for the third time in a row, where it achieved its third-best result to date. The singer Michał Szpak ended up in 8th place and also scored a new high for the country with 229 points. This success could not be continued in 2017. The singer Kasia Moś reached the final, but only ended up in 22nd place there. In 2018, the series of qualifications ended and Poland was eliminated in the semifinals for the first time since 2011. The country could not reach the final in 2019 either, but only narrowly missed the finals with 11th place.

In total, four of the 22 entries ended up in the left half of the table. In addition, Poland came last once so far (2011), but was also able to achieve second place (1994). However, with only two further placements among the top ten and eight missed finals, Poland is one of the less successful countries in the competition.

National preliminary decisions

The first seven Polish contributions were selected internally. In 2003 a national preliminary decision took place for the first time under the name Krajowe Eliminacje do Konkursu Piosenki Eurowizji . In 2004 a preliminary decision was held under the same name. In 2005, however, the contribution was again selected internally. From 2006 to 2009 Piosenka dla Europy ("A Song for Europe") took place as a preliminary decision. In 2010 and 2011 the preliminary decision took place under the title Krajowe eliminacje ("National Selection"). In 2014 and 2015, the contributions were again selected internally. From 2016 to 2018, however, all Polish contributions were again selected in a preliminary decision under the title Krajowe eliminacje . In 2019, the song and artist were selected internally for the first time in four years. In 2020, with the program Szansa na Sukces Eurowizja, a new preliminary decision format took place, which went over three semi-finals. There some interpreters sang a cover song each under a motto. In the end, one participant per semi-finals qualified for the final, which means that three performers took part in the final with their own songs.

In accordance with the competition rules, the entries were presented in Polish from 1994 to 1998 . After the abolition of this rule, many different languages ​​were used in the Polish contributions, especially in the 2000s. Czarna dziewczyna was sung in Polish and Russian in 2005. In 2004 there were some lines in Spanish in the otherwise purely English text of Love Song . The contributions in 2003 and 2006 - presented by the Ich Troje group - contained text in Polish, German and Russian, Follow My Heart also included Spanish and English. Otherwise, the majority of the contributions were sung in English after the language regulation had fallen. The songs were only sung in Polish in 1999 and 2011. Polish-English mixed versions were created in 2010, 2014 and 2019.

Award of the highest rating

Since 1994 Poland has given the highest number of points to 19 different countries, six of them to Ukraine. In the semifinals, on the other hand, Poland awarded the maximum number of points to 13 different countries, three of them to Ukraine.

• The Polish contributions repeatedly performed very differently with the audience and the juries: In 2014, the country reached 14th place in the final, but would have come in fifth had it been pure televoting. In 2015, the Polish entry would have reached 15th place in a pure televoting, but came last in the juries with two points. Likewise in 2016: Poland came second to last in the juries and 3rd place in the audience, resulting in 8th place out of 26 participants. That changed in the first semi-final in 2019, when Poland received 60 points from both the spectators and the jury. With 120 points Poland could not qualify for the final.
