The 52nd Eurovision Song Contest took place on May 10th and 12th, 2007 under the motto "True Fantasy" in the Hartwall Areena in Finland's capital Helsinki . The winner was the Serbian contribution Molitva by Marija Šerifović .
After the victory of the hard rock band Lordi the previous year, the Finnish broadcaster Yleisradio received the order from the organizer EBU to host the event . Finland, which has been participating in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1961, hosted the competition for the first time.
The EBU decided that the event was brought forward and took place on the second weekend in May. The venue was the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki. The programs were presented by the moderators Jaana Pelkonen and Mikko Leppilampi. The televoting in the final was opened by the Finnish Santa Claus Joulupukki .
particularities
The surprising victory of the hard rock band Lordi in the previous year motivated many countries to submit similar songs to the competition, which was an unusual situation for a competition that was previously geared more towards pop music . In addition to hosts Finland, countries such as Andorra, Iceland and Moldova also sent songs that did not previously fit the norm of the competition. This continued in the years that followed, even if 2007 was not really a guarantee of success.
After the Swiss DJ BoBo was eliminated in the semi-finals, the international bookmakers Verka Serduchka ( Ukraine ), Dmitri Koldun ( Belarus ), Marija Šerifović ( Serbia ), the Swedish band The Ark and the Russian girls' band Serebro were considered favorites to win. On the other hand, German starter Roger Cicero with the swing number Frauen reign'n die Welt was granted only outsider chances, in the end he finished 19th. Despite this poor placement, until 2010, when Germany won, no German contribution was able to fight for a better placement. Austria's contribution Get a Life - Get Alive by Eric Papilaya was also eliminated in the semifinals.
On the occasion of the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki, the Finnish Post issued a sheet of 4 stamps on May 9, 2007. One stamp shows Mister Lordi Tomi Putaansuu, the second the complete band Lordi, and the third shows the former Finnish Eurovision participants Laila Kinnunen (1961), Marion Rung (1962, 1973), Kirka (1984) and Katri-Helena (1979, 1993) ) as well as the symbol of the Eurovision Song Contest with the Finnish flag on the fourth.
This year, the Barbara Dex Award , initiated by a fan site, was presented for the eleventh time. The “worst” outfit of the competition is to be awarded with this price, which should not be taken very seriously. This year's winner was Verka Serduchka from Ukraine.
In 2007 the EBU introduced the so-called Winner Tour . To better promote the winning title, a tour through Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain was organized for the winner and a private jet made available for this purpose . Marija Serifovic was received by the respective ESC interpreters of the countries. TV appearances, interviews for magazines and newspapers, live chats with fans, and appearances in central squares of the respective cities were also planned.
Attendees
Contrary to the original plans, which provided for a reduction in the number of directly qualifying countries, the EBU ultimately stuck to the participant regulation that had been in place since 2004. In addition, 14 countries qualified directly for the final: The ten best placed last year and the four largest contributors to the EBU. Georgia , Montenegro , Serbia and the Czech Republic took part in the competition for the first time. Austria and Hungary returned. The maximum number of participants, originally set at 40, has been increased to 43. With the cancellation of Monaco , the number of actual participants was finally reduced to 42.
The following performers returned to the competition:
country | Interpreter | Previous year of participation |
---|---|---|
Iceland | Eiríkur Hauksson | 1986 (as a member of ICY ), 1991 (for Norway , as a member of Just 4 Fun ) |
Macedonia | Karolina Gočeva | 2002 |
Cyprus | Evridiki | 1992 , 1994 |

The Big Four
Germany, France, the UK and Spain make the largest financial contributions to the EBU. In addition, based on the number of viewers, these countries have the largest member stations of the EBU, which together serve almost a quarter of a billion people. In order to avoid that a large part of the European audience potential could break away in the event of a bad placement in the previous year, these countries are generally placed in the final.
- Germany : As in 2006, three candidates competed in the preliminary round at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg on March 8, 2007 : Roger Cicero with women rule the world , the trio of girls Monrose with Even Heaven Cries and Heinz Rudolf Kunze with Die Welt ist Pop, whereby Cicero could clearly prevail.
