Dmitry Kaldun ( Belarusian Дмітры Калдун ; Russian Дмитрий Александрович Колдун / Dmitri Alexandrowitsch Koldun ; born June 11, 1985 in Minsk ), also known as Koldun , is a Belarusian singer. He represented his country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 (ESC) in Helsinki .

Training and beginning of the music career

Dmitry Kaldun was born in 1985 in Minsk, in what was then the Soviet Union . His mother was a founding member of the Belarusian Princess Diana Fan Club. As a child he was enthusiastic about music, literature and the natural sciences , after which he later began studying chemistry at the Belarusian state university in his hometown, which he completed in 2002. After that, he focused on a musical career. In 2004 he reached the finals of the casting show People's artist-2 on the Russian television channel Rossija 1 . From 2004 to 2005 the singer was a member of the State Symphony Orchestra under Mikhail Finberg and participated with varying degrees of success in national music festivals such as Molodechno 2005 and Slaviansky Bazaar in Vitebsk .

In 2006 Kaldun took part in the Belarusian preliminary decision for the 51st Eurovision Song Contest in Athens , where he competed with the English-language title May Be . In the same year he became known to a wide audience through his participation in the sixth edition of the casting show Star Factory on the Russian television channel Channel One . He won the Russian version of Pop Idol and later performed with the German hard rock band Scorpions and the song Still Loving You at the invitation of Klaus Meine . As a result, he signed a contract with the National Music Corporation and appeared in the newly formed band KGB .

Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest

In 2007, Kaldun took part in the Belarusian ESC preliminary round EuroFest for the second time . There he was among the last three finalists thanks to the audience vote and the favor of the jury of experts around his former mentor Michail Finberg. By Jury decision Kalduns English-language song is Work Your Magic determined as winning titles, making him for participation in the semi-final of the Euro Vision Song Contest 2007 in Finland qualified Helsinki. The pop title was composed by the well-known Russian musician Filipp Kirkorow , participant in the Eurovision Song Contest 1995 , and the text was written by Karen A. Kawalerjan. The latter was responsible for the Russian contribution Never Let You Go at the ESC 2006 , with which Dima Bilan took second place.

With Work Your Magic , which because of its orchestration strongly reminds media representatives of James Bond songs such as Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever , Kaldun was able to place himself among the ten most popular titles of the ESC semi-finals on May 10, which is the qualification for the Finals taking place two days later meant. In the international betting shops, the Belarusian singer was considered a favorite alongside Verka Serduchka from the Ukraine and the Serbian Marija Šerifović and finally finished 6th when Šerifović won. In the run-up to the ESC, Kaldun had visited the Netherlands on a promotional tour together with the Bosnian participant Marija Šestić .
