The Eurovision Choir (until 2018 Eurovision Choir of the Year ) is a competition that takes place every two years for choirs. The EBU was inspired by the World Choir Games . The competition always takes place at the same time as the European Choir Games and so the venue has always been selected. The first competition took place on July 22, 2017 in Riga , Latvia .

origin

The Eurovision Choir is an event published by the EBU in which only non-professional choirs take part. It is the first new Eurovision event since the Eurovision Dance Contest in 2007. The choirs are broadcast by EBU members and each represent a country.

Conditions of participation

The EBU sets a number of conditions in order to be able to participate in the competition:

  • The choir must have been selected either through a national preliminary decision or by a jury in order to be able to represent its country. The only exception are choirs that are already taking part in the European Choir Games and at the same time taking part in this competition.
  • A choir must have a minimum of four and a maximum of 45 members, all of whom appear on stage.
  • The choir must have been resident in its participating country for at least six months before being selected.
  • The choirs must all perform a cappella .

format

2017

Each choir performed between one and a maximum of three pieces within a maximum of six minutes. At least one of them should represent the national character of a country. The choice of language was left to the choirs themselves. The winner was only determined by jury voting. The jury consisted of three professional members. Only places 1, 2 and 3 were announced. The remaining placements remained unknown.

2019

In 2019 there are slight changes compared to the 2017 system. The winner will still be determined by jury voting. The jury consists of three professional members. The final will contain two rounds. In the first round, all choirs present a four-minute piece. The jury then selects three choirs that reach the second round and then present another piece there. This time this can only be a maximum of three minutes. The jury then selects the winner.

designation

Until 2018, the competition was called Eurovision Choir of the Year (German: Eurovision Choir of the Year). Since 2019, however, the competition has only been officially performed as the Eurovision Choir . Reasons for the name change were not disclosed by the EBU.
