The 6th Junior Eurovision Song Contest , the junior competition of the Eurovision Song Contest , was held on November 22, 2008. The host country was Cyprus, the venue was the “Spyros Kipiranou Sports Center”, which is also known as the “Palais des Sports”, in Limassol . CyBC took over the management . They were able to prevail against Portugal, Sweden and the Ukraine in the event rights. After last year's debut, Georgia won the competition for the first time with the Bzikebi group and the Bzzz title .

Rule change

After the age limit was reset to 10 years, there was a rule change this year as well. In addition to the compulsory televoting, there was also an expert jury in each country who distributed their points. The two votes were added up in equal parts and gave the country result. At the Eurovision Song Contest this innovation was introduced in 2009 for the finals and from 2010 for all shows (finals and the two semi-finals).

Attendees

The maximum number of participants was set back to 18 in advance. Israel and Bosnia and Herzegovina announced their participation, but canceled their participation. Azerbaijan was announced as a debutant, but withdrew from the competition in early October due to a dispute with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). So in the end 15 countries took part, as in 2006.

  • Participant in 2008
  • Countries that have participated in the past but not in 2008
  • The Junior Eurovision Song Contest had only two entries from Central Europe in the field of participants in 2008 , otherwise one entry comes from Southern Europe and the other twelve from Eastern Europe .

    • PortugalPortugal Portugal - After Portugal reached the penultimate place in 2006 and 2007, RTP was no longer interested in participating.
    • SwedenSweden Sweden - TV4 had other plans at the time of JESC 2008 and withdrew as well. However, they participated again in 2009.

    • AzerbaijanAzerbaijan Azerbaijan - Azerbaijan was announced as a participant, but withdrew at short notice after the actual closing date at the beginning of October due to disputes with the EBU. The responsible broadcaster ITV therefore had to expect severe penalties from the EBU.
    • IsraelIsrael Israel - IBA was confirmed as a new participant, but had to cancel afterwards due to financial problems.
    • Bosnia and HerzegovinaBosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina - BHRT was also announced as a participant, but canceled a month later.
