Preliminary decisions
Every year since 2006, RTR has held a preliminary decision, mostly in June or July with around 20 participants, only 2005 and 2014 were selected internally. The preliminary decision for Sofia took place on September 25, 2015. In 2016, the Russian preliminary round will for the first time not take place in Moscow , but in Sochi .
Participation in the competition
It took part for the first time in 2005 and every year since then. With two wins, two second and three fourth places in nine participations, Russia is one of the most successful countries in the competition, but has not yet held it.
Russia's worst result was for a long time the 9th place, which was achieved in the first participation. However, after winning in 2017, Russia undercut this result twice; The country landed in 10th place in 2018 and only 13th in 2019.The latter result is Russia's only place outside the top 10.
The Tolmacheva sisters , who won for Russia in 2006, represented the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen and took 7th place in the final. They are the first JESC winners to compete in the ESC.
