This article looks at the history of Belgium as a participant in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest .

Preliminary decisions

Originally, an annual rotation principle between the RTBF ( Wallonia ) and VRT ( Flanders ) was planned, as is also practiced at the Eurovision Song Contest. The VRT made the contribution from 2003, the following year it was the RTBF's turn. When the competition took place in Hasselt , Belgium in 2005 , both broadcasters had a joint preliminary decision, and the competition was also organized by both broadcasters.

After that, the Walloon RTBF withdrew from the competition due to a lack of interest, and since then the Flemish VRT has been solely responsible for the Belgian contributions to the JESC. Since then, the Junior Eurosong preliminary round has been held every year . It ran on één up to and including 2009, and in 2010 it moved to the children's channel Ketnet . As a result, all Belgian contributions were now sung in Dutch, although there were also several songs in the preliminary round that were (partly) sung in French.

Over the years, the selection mode has been changed many times, usually there were several preliminary rounds, the winner was determined by a jury and the audience. Particularly noteworthy is the mode of Junior Eurosong 2009 : Two versions of each of the entries were recorded and performed. In the preliminary rounds, the version that will represent Belgium at the JESC in the event of victory was also chosen. From the winning entry Zo ran there was a Yodelo version as well as a Classico version without yodelling, at the JESC Laura Omloop performed with the yodel version.

In 2013 the VRT withdrew from the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The reason given was the decreased interest in international competition. Since the preliminary round was very popular, however, Junior Eurosong was developed into a new casting format for children, independent of the JESC. The popularity of the preliminary decision meant that the associated albums often took high positions in the Flemish charts, in 2007, 2009 and 2010 the Junior Eurosong albums even took first place.

Participation in the competition

Laura finished fourth in 2009
Fabian, currently the last Belgian interpreter at JESC

Belgium took part in the JESC for the first time in 2003 and since then every year up to and including 2012. Although it was never enough to finish in the top three, they finished fourth in 2009, just eight points behind the winners from the Netherlands and a fifth Place in 2012. In 2013 and 2014, Belgium missed out, although until then it was one of only three countries that had always participated. VRT will not return in 2015 either. RTBF from Wallonia is also not interested in participating.
