The Eurovision Song Contest 1971 was the 16th song competition of the European broadcasters Eurovision since it began in 1956. It took place on April 3, 1971 at the Gaiety Theater in Dublin , since last year's winner Dana had run for Ireland . The event was moderated by Bernadette Ní Ghallchóir . Séverine won the contest for Monaco with the song Un banc, un arbre, une rue .

particularities

The new scoring system again caused some confusion. Several countries, a total of 8 out of 18, did not use the maximum possible number of 10 points (two jurors with 5 points each) for a country's contribution. One consequence was that the countries gave different numbers of votes overall. The French jurors awarded a total of 107 points, but the Luxembourgers “only” 43 points. It was not possible to determine whether they did this to help their country or a “friendly” country win. However, this behavior was also evident in the following years in which this rating system was applied (1971 to 1973).

In order to open the Eurovision Song Contest to new music genres, the rule that only duos or soloists were allowed to perform was lifted. From now on up to 6 musicians for one country were allowed on stage.

Attendees

  • participating countries
  • Countries that had participated in a previous ESC, but not in 1971
  • The attendance rose to 18 again this year as Malta first attended and the following five countries returned: Finland, Norway, Austria, Portugal and Sweden.

    Voting procedure

A new voting procedure has been introduced. Each country sent two jurors to the competition, one over and the other under 25 years of age. The two jurors had to cast their votes publicly. The juries had to give each song points: at least one point, at most five points.
