Les Fatals Picards is a French rock band founded in 2000 that represented their home country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 (ESC) in Helsinki .

Band history

Foundation and first successes

The group was founded in early 2000 in Paris in the garage of the singer and songwriter Ivan Callot. He made music with students from Picardy who were studying in the French capital, to which the band name Les Fatals Picards (German: "The fatal Picards") refers. This was followed by self-production of the album Amiens c'est aussi le tien, before guitarist and former electrician Laurent Honel, singer Regis Rodrigues, Gilles Di Giovanni (drums) and Eric Charpentier (electric bass) joined Les in September 2000 for tax reasons Fatals Picards to join. The five of them recorded the album Navet Maria in 2001 . Rodrigues, Di Giovanni and Charpentier soon left the formation and from September 2001 Callot and Honel continued as singers and guitarists.

In September 2002 they won the drummer Jean-Marc Sauvagnargues, who increasingly organized concert appearances, and it gradually became a success. In 2003, the album Droit de véto was produced with the Adone record label . Callot switched to guitar, Laurent switched to bass. At the end of 2004, the fourth album Picardia Independenza (2005) was recorded with guitarist Olivier Delafosse, alias "Oldelaf" and Adone . At the same time, Paul Léger joined the vocals, who established himself as the lead singer at Les Fatals Picards alongside Callot . He is currently the only native Picard and comes from Saint-Maximin , in the Oise department . The fifth and so far last member was the bassist Yves Giroud. In 2006 the group was signed by Warner Music .

In 2007 Ivan Callot, Laurent Honel, Jean-Marc Sauvagnargues, Paul Léger and Yves Giroud recorded the album Pamplemousse mécanique . To date, Les Fatals Picards have played over 400 concerts in front of more than 150,000 people and sold over 30,000 albums. Often the group takes on serious topics in their self-written texts in a humorous way, which also includes the use of puns . The songs are also decorated with a Picardy accent and are inspired by numerous French artists, including Boby Lapointe , Marcel et son orchester or Les Vrp . Like Les Vrp, Les Fatals Picard are assigned to the genre of satirical rock , with influences from punk , pop and ska .

Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest

Les Fatals Picards in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2007

On 6 March 2007 Les Fatals Picard took the title L'amour à la française in the French preselection for the 52 Euro Vision Song Contest in Finland Helsinki , Et si on gagnait? (Eng. "And if you win?"), part. There they were able to win the majority of the audience calls and the favor of the expert jury and prevailed against nine other candidates. With the song L'amour à la française , the band parodies typical French clichés of foreign tourists. The text is in " franglais " - partly in French , partly in English and with an appropriate accent. The producer of the French ESC preliminary decision, Pierre-Antoine Boucly, hoped with the title to show the "diversity and richness" of the French music scene after soft ballads represented France in the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years without success . "We hope to move beyond the rather old-fashioned and outdated image of the competition by presenting a decidedly new style for the Tricolore candidate," said Boucly.

After winning the French preliminary round, Les Fatals Picards completed concerts in Israel and Malta, among others . The French entry was automatically set for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest on May 12th in Helsinki. Dressed for their appearance by the famous fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier , the band did not get past 22nd place in the victory of the Serbian Marija Šerifović .
