Bilal Hassani (born September 9, 1999 in Paris ) is a French singer-songwriter and web video producer of Moroccan origin.

life and career

Hassani started singing in front of his family at the age of five and later took singing lessons. He has an older brother named Taha, born in 1995. His father lives in Singapore .

In 2015, at the suggestion of his friend Nemo Schiffman, finalist of the first season, Bilal Hassani took part in the second season of the French talent show The Voice Kids and presented himself with the song Rise Like a Phoenix by Conchita Wurst , a singer he admires. Têtu magazine mentioned Bilal Hassani in its list of 30 LGBT + qui bougent la France (“30 LGBT + who move France”). The magazine describes him as "an icon for the LGBT + youth of France".

In 2017 he completed his school education with a baccalauréat in literature and philosophy ( baccalauréat littéraire ).

On December 6, 2018 it was announced that he would take part in the French preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Roi . In the first semi-final on January 12, 2019, he qualified first for the final. In the final on January 26, 2019, he landed fifth after the jury's vote, but first after the telephone vote and thus represented France at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv, where he then landed in 16th place in the final.

After the preliminary round there were messages of hate and death threats against Hassani from their own country. The reasons for this were his homosexuality and his Moroccan origin.

On October 2, 2019, he published his biography Singulier . Bilal also made a cameo in the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga .
