action

The Icelandic singer Lars Erickssong dreams of winning the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Together with his childhood friend Sigrit Ericksdottir, he founded the band Fire Saga , which performed in their hometown of Húsavík . The management of the Icelandic preliminary decision for the ESC 2020 intends to send the singer Katiana into the race, as she could actually win the competition. There are already 11 participants for the preliminary decision, but the statutes stipulate that twelve participants are required. Since everyone is assuming that Katiana will win anyway, they just blindly choose a group. The choice falls on Fire Saga. Lars is so ecstatic with joy that he is even brought to the police station because he rang the church bell. Sigrit, meanwhile, is convinced that the elves she asked for help are responsible for this unexpected luck.

Both of them receive no support from their parents. Lars' father thinks he wasted his life on stupid daydreams, Sigrit's mother thinks she deserves better than Lars. A lot goes wrong during the preliminary round, and Lars is embarrassed. He's so sad that he won't go to the attendee aftershow party, which is on a boat. Sigrit remains by his side as mental support. Suddenly the boat explodes. This makes Fire Saga the last remaining candidate.

At the ESC in Edinburgh , Lars and Sigrit have different ideas about their appearance. Lars has a new stage design developed and works with a K-Pop star to spice up the song. In the run-up, both meet the Russian singer Alexander Lemtov, who is hosting a party to which Fire Saga is also invited. Numerous winners from previous ESCs are guests at the party, as well as this year's participants. Sigrit spends the evening with Lemtov, while Lars stays with the Greek singer Mita. However, Lars has a slightly dismissive effect, since he only speaks of winning the ESC. The evening creates tension between Lars and Sigrit because Lars doesn't want to lose them to Lemtov. Sigrit, on the other hand, fears that Lars slept with Mita, which turns out to be wrong.

At the beginning of the semifinals everything looks pretty good, until Sigrit's scarf gets caught in a gymnastics wheel placed on the stage and the performance ends in disaster. However, they finish the song. Lars immediately leaves the stage and goes back to Iceland, while Sigrit stays and receives support from Lemtov. Lars doesn't even notice that the audience applauded at the end, nor that Iceland was voted into the final. In Iceland, Lars decides to give up his dreams and work as a fisherman. He also confesses his love for Sigrit to his father. He tells him to fight for Sigrit. When Lars learns that Iceland has made it to the final, he asks the organizing team for support for the return trip to Edinburgh. But the CFO Victor tries to kill him. Under no circumstances should Iceland win, as the country does not have the means to host the competition the following year. In the course of this, he also confesses to the murder of all candidates who died on the boat, in the hope that Iceland would not be able to participate in the ESC. He is killed by elves, however, because Lars previously asked for their support from the ESC.

Lars arrives just in time and suggests that Sigrit sing her specially composed song for Lars. This is against the rules and will result in disqualification, but winning is not everything. They kiss to great applause. Erick proudly watches the competition with Sigrit's mother Helka. Alexander, who is gay but does not want to show this publicly in Russia, discusses the possibility of moving to Greece with Mita.

Lars and Sigrit return to their hometown, where they are greeted with a grand reception. A few months later, Fire Saga performs with her young baby at Erick and Helka's wedding.
