The SSE Hydro (or The Hydro for short ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Finnieston district of the Scottish city of Glasgow , United Kingdom . The arena was built on a 64 ac (approximately 259,000 ) plot of land about 2.7 km west of the city center on the north bank of the Clyde . It is part of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Center (SECC), which opened in 1985 . The Hydro offers 13,000 seats (12,000 seats and 1,000 standing) and is the largest event hall in the country. Public electricity , gas and telecommunications company SSE plc has been a name sponsor since 2011 and pays £ 15 million over ten years .

history

The planning for the hall began in 2001. The architectural office Foster + Partners was selected in 2004 for the construction of the building. On October 27, 2005, the office presented their designs to the public. In February 2011, the construction company Lend Lease Group began building the venue in the vicinity of the Clyde Auditorium (3,000 seats), which was inaugurated in 1997 . The structure of the stands is based on an ancient amphitheater . Permanently installed, movable and expandable spectator seats are used on the lowest level for flexibility. The facade is clad with translucent ETFE film cushions, similar to the Allianz Arena in Munich . It can be illuminated with up to 12.8 million colors and images can be projected onto it. The arena is 33 meters high at the front and 15 meters at the north rear. The flat domed roof ( diameter : 120 meters) with a lattice-shaped steel construction and a weight of 1,400 tons spans the hall and is 45 meters above the ground at the highest point.

On June 8, 2013, parts of the hall roof and the facade burned due to flying sparks during welding work. After the fire site was assessed, however, the damage was less than initially feared and the work remained on schedule. There was damage of £ five million. On September 30, 2013, the £ 125 million hall opened with a concert by British singer Rod Stewart . It was the beginning of three more concerts by Stewart on the following days.
