Amar pelos dois [ ɐˈmaɾ pəɫuʒ ˈðojʃ ] ( Portuguese "To love for both") is a song written by the Portuguese jazz musician Luísa Sobral and interpreted by her brother Salvador Sobral . This was the first time that Portugal won the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 .
background
Since December 5, 2016 it was clear that Luísa Sobral would be commissioned as composer for the Portuguese preliminary decision Festival da Canção 2017 . On January 18, 2017, it was announced that her brother Salvador would sing her song Amar pelos dois . Sobral appeared in the first semi-final on February 19, 2017 and qualified for the final on March 5. He won this as the winner of the jury vote and also as the winner in the televoting , the public vote . The song was officially released on March 10, 2017.
composition
In the song Amar pelos dois written by his sister Luísa, Salvador Sobral describes a lost love and an attempt to regain it. He asks the addressed person several times to come back to him (“Peço que regresses, que me voltes a querer”; I beg you to come back and love me again ). Sobral wrote the song for the brother with the intention of writing him a nice song without looking to success. The song should definitely be held in Portuguese to reflect the beauty of the language and identification with the country.
The instrumentation in Amar pelos dois is limited to string instruments and a piano . Background vocals are not used, only the singer can be heard. Salvador Sobral himself said that the song was based on the Great American Songbook . Characteristic for the song is the 6/8 time, which makes the song work slowly at 92 BPM , the simple and classic instrumentation and the appearance of the singer.
At the Eurovision Song Contest
Portugal was drawn into the first half of the first semi-final on January 31, 2017; on March 31, 2017 the starting order was published. With his song Amar pelos dois, Salvador Sobral made it to the finals for May 13th 2017 on May 9th from start number 9. With the bookmakers, Portugal was one of the favorites to win along with Italy and Bulgaria . The title received the highest total of points from both the juries and the spectators.
After his sister had already represented him in the semi-final rehearsals, both sang the song together after winning the final.
At the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon the following year , Sobral Amar pelos dois sang in a duet with the Brazilian singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso , whom he describes as one of his greatest role models. For Sobral it was the first public appearance after his heart transplant in December 2017.
Cover versions
One day after the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, Alexander Rybak (ESC winner of 2009) published an English version of the song. In 2018 Karin Bachner published a Wienerlied version with Richard Oesterreicher under the title “Love enough for us two”.
