Toy is a song that was recorded by the Israeli singer Netta and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 .

The song won the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with 529 points. After 1978 , 1979 and 1998 , this was Israel's fourth victory in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Creation and publication

The song was written by Doron Medalie and Stav Berger and produced by the latter. On March 11, 2018, the song was released alongside the official music video directed by Keren Hochma.

Toy was first sent to the start on May 8, 2018 in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest, where it was presented among 19 songs with starting number seven. As announced later, the song qualified with the most votes for the final. After the jury vote, Netta took third place behind Austria and Sweden with 212 points and won the televoting with 317 points, which brought her overall victory with a total of 529 points.

Musical and content

The text was mostly written in English , except for the Hebrew sentence אני לא בובה ( ani lo buba , "I am not a puppet / puppet") and the slang expression סטפה ( stefa , "a chunk of money").

The song Toy deals with "the divine beauty of every woman that simple-minded men are unable to recognize," according to the Jüdische Allgemeine . The song is a response to the MeToo debate about sexual harassment in the entertainment industry, said the singer. The text ("I'm not your toy, you stupid boy" and "My teddy bear's running away, The Barbie got something to say, hey") is aimed at chauvinistic men. "Wonder Woman, never forget, you are divine and he will soon regret it" is a reference to the Israeli actress Gal Gadot (who played Wonder Woman ). Musically, Toy is a mixture of K-Pop , Pop and Middle Eastern influences.

Music critics rated Netta Barzilai's contribution to the ESC positively. “In any case, Toy alternates in a largely pleasant way between insanity and seriousness and the most varied of musical genres. There are risk-free syncopated R'n'B passages to be heard as well as a K-Pop refrain painted over with chewing gum. The rhythmic and tonal foundation, however, is the mizrahi music, in which Western and Arabic motifs are combined, ”wrote Jens Balzer in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit .

Udo Dahmen , Artistic Director of the Popakademie in Mannheim, described the song as a “catchy tune”: “I think the song is really, really beautiful. On the one hand, the way in which she approaches: She sees the gender issue of 'Makes women strong' completely as her own subject, at the same time she also looks at it with a cackle from the humorous side. “The text is intelligent. "He describes the role issue between men and women and makes it clear from their position: I am me and have to represent my own position."

Julian Dörr from the Süddeutsche Zeitung also praised Netta Barzilai's performance at the ESC: "Netta Barzilai and her famous twisted song" Toy "are the deserved winners of this year's ESC. Because on this evening the young Israeli is the only one who succeeds in what really good pop should really be: contemporary music, in tune with the times, absolutely present, both musically and in terms of content. "

The 2017 ESC winner, Salvador Sobral from Portugal, decidedly rejected Barzilai's music: "Youtube recommended her song to me, so I clicked on it and then came this terrible music."

Allegations of plagiarism

The US-American record company Universal Music Group accuses Netta that Toy took over the rhythm of the song Seven Nation Army from The White Stripes , with no objection to the melody and lyrics . The managers Doron Medalie and Stav Beger have received a letter confirming the allegations. Should the allegations prove to be true, Netta threatens disqualification and Israel the withdrawal of the right to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 . On February 6, 2019, it was announced that Jack White , the lead singer of The White Stripes, would receive royalties for "Toy". This would have been agreed with Universal Music. In order to avoid a process and thus a subsequent disqualification , Jack White was added to the list of authors of the song.
