Arcade ( English for "Spielhalle") is an English-language pop song by the Dutch singer Duncan Laurence . He won a competition entry of the country to the Euro Vision Song Contest 2019 in Israeli Tel Aviv .

Music and lyrics

It is in Arcade is a restricted painted with electronic sounds and female backing vocals pop - ballad . The song was composed by Duncan Laurence himself, Joel Sjöö, Wouter Hardy and Willi Knox. Oscar Holleman and Wouter Hardy were the producers of the play.

The piece is written in A minor and consists of two stanzas, a bridge and a refrain . After a piano intro with backing vocals, the song begins with the first verse, followed by a pre-chorus and finally the refrain. After the second verse, there is no pre-chorus, and Duncan Laurance sings the chorus immediately afterwards, before moving on to the bridge. There is a chord change in the last chorus . The song ends with the theme of the intro.

The song is about a "love not lived" and the "loss of a loved one who died young and can therefore no longer experience the great love".

Duncan Laurence sings Arcade during ESC rehearsals

Duncan Laurence was selected internally by the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS . The semi-final draw took place on January 28, 2019, in which each country was drawn to one of the two semi-finals; the Netherlands were drawn into the second semi-finals on May 16, 2019 and appeared in the second half of the show on position 16 out of 18. The Netherlands was already considered by the bookmakers as the favorite to win. The Netherlands won the second semi-final and received 140 points each from the jury and the spectators. In the finale on May 18, Arcade was presented as the twelfth of 26 entries. It won with a total of 492 points. Although he could neither win the jury nor the audience voting, 231 from the jury (third place) and 261 from the audience (second place) were enough for him to win the final. This was the fifth time that the Netherlands won the competition after 1957 , 1959 , 1969 and 1975 .

On March 7, 2019, the song was presented to the public on the television program De Wereld Draait Door . Even before the competition he reached number one in the domestic Dutch charts and number seven in Belgium ( Flanders ).

The single was certified gold for 40,000 units sold in the Netherlands before the final . After the finals, it achieved platinum status for more than 80,000 units sold.
