life and career
Sobral comes from a Portuguese noble family . His sister Luísa Sobral (* 1987) is also a singer and composer. The parents of the two are Salvador Luis Cabral Braamcamp Sobral (* 1955) and Luisa Posser de Andrade Vilar (* 1960). His great-grandfather Luis José Aimable Braamcamp Sobral (1874-1934) was 4th Conde de Sobral . His aunt Maria Eugénia Braamcamp de Melo Breyner (1837–1879) had married Francisco de Borja de Sousa Holstein , son of Pedro de Sousa Holstein , offspring of a German-Portuguese branch of the House of Oldenburg from the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck line . One of his ancestors is Karl I von Hohenzollern .
Sobral originally studied psychology, but dropped out in favor of jazz studies in Barcelona . He later went to the United States . After returning to Europe, he studied jazz at the Taller de Musics in Barcelona. First own music projects were influenced by the style of Chet Baker as well as Brazilian Bossa Nova and other Latin American music styles .
In 2009 he participated in the Portuguese version of Idols and reached number seven.
In 2016 Sobral recorded his debut album, which was released under the title Excuse me . He works closely with the Venezuelan composer Leonardo Aldrey to produce the songs. Sobral's sister Luísa contributed her own composition ( I Might Just Stay Away ).
In 2017 he took part in the Festival da Canção , the Portuguese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . In the first semifinals he reached second place with the ballad Amar pelos dois , which his sister had composed and written the lyrics and thus qualified for the final, which he won. With Amar pelos dois he also won the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev .
In 2019 Sobral toured successfully in Germany with his new program Paris Lisboa, which he presented with a jazz band .
Temporary career break
On September 8, 2017, Sobral had to interrupt his career first; he said goodbye with a concert, which was entitled "Até já!" ( German see you soon! ). On September 25th, he was waiting for a vital donor heart in an intensive care unit near Lisbon . Because of his cardiac rhythm disorders , he had already not been able to take part in the rehearsals at the ESC, so that he had to be represented by his sister. Sobral himself said in September 2017: “It is no longer a secret to anyone that I have poor health. I have a problem. Unfortunately, the time has come to surrender my body to science and thereby give up my concert life and music as a whole. Civilization must be left for a while to go to where the problem will surely be solved. Unfortunately I don't know how long this will take. ”In mid-December 2017, Sobral received a donor heart in a clinic in Lisbon. Less than two weeks later, on December 22nd, he was hospitalized again in Carnaxide because he had suffered kidney failure . In mid-January 2018 he said that he was getting better and better, that he was motivated for the future, that he was even thinking of a new album, but that the healing process needed time. In his first appearance since his operation, at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 , in which he sang two songs, including his winning title in a duet with the Brazilian idol Caetano Veloso , he was enthusiastically received by the audience.
