Richter, son of Gottlieb Friedrich Richter (* 1781 in Wurzen ) and his wife Dorothea Henrietta, née Degenkolb (* 1791 in Thorn), studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1835 to 1843 . In 1836 he appeared with the painting Hermann and Dorothea , a pictorial implementation of the epic epic by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . However, literary material did not remain his subject. As a genre painter, he devoted himself to depicting bourgeois and rural scenes in the Rhineland , especially the life of the winegrowers on the Ahr and Rhine . A special feature of his work is that he addressed pauperism and the social question in the late romantic scenes of his pictures . Richter lived in Düsseldorf until his death and was a member of the Malkasten artists' association . He married Bertha Schmidt from Mainz (* 1819). The couple had five children, including their son Hermann Richter (1844–1926), who was a Protestant pastor in Mülheim an der Ruhr from 1872 to 1908 .
