Luísa Maria Vilar Braamcamp Sobral (born September 18, 1987 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese singer and composer . She sings all of the songs she has written herself in Portuguese and English . She lives in Lisbon.

For Portugal's contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 , she wrote the song Amar pelos dois , with which her younger brother Salvador Sobral won the competition. After the award ceremony, the siblings came on stage together and sang the winning song in a duet.

Life

She started playing guitar when she was twelve. Influenced by the musical taste of her parents, she listened to music by the Beatles , but above all jazz classics such as Billie Holiday , Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker . At the age of only 16, she first stepped into the public spotlight as a candidate in the casting show Ídolos on the television channel SIC . Ídolos was the Portuguese offshoot of the Pop Idol format, produced in Germany under the title Deutschland sucht den Superstar . She reached third place.

She then went to Boston and studied music for four years at Berklee College of Music (graduated in 2009). During her time in the USA, she received several awards for her songwriting . Among them were nominations for the Malibu Music Awards 2008 ( Best Jazz Song ), the Hollywood Music Awards ( Best Jazz Artist ), the International Songwriting Competition 2007 in Nashville, and the The John Lennon Songwriting Competition 2008. After completing her studies, she followed suit in 2009 New York and commuted between the USA and Portugal for several years.

In 2011 her debut album The Cherry On My Cake was released . It was recorded in Lisbon and New York and made it to third place on the Portuguese sales charts. Her second album There's A Flower In My Bedroom was released in 2013. Again all the pieces were written by Luísa Sobral, guest musician was u. a. Mário Laginha . She also sang two duets here, with the Englishman Jamie Cullum and the fado singer António Zambujo . The album debuted at number 2 on the charts in Portugal.

She played a number of concerts, in Portugal and abroad, as part of her tour with Melody Gardot in German-speaking countries. There were also some festivals, in addition to national and international jazz festivals also the Super Bock Super Rock 2009. Luísa Sobral has already appeared on television several times, both in Portugal and abroad, including 2012 in the broadcast of Jools Holland on the BBC .

Her album Lu-Pu-i-Pi-Sa-Pa , released in 2014, was the first time she sang entirely in Portuguese . It again reached the top 10 of the Portuguese charts. The album Luísa followed in 2016 .
