Melody Gardot Joy [ 'mɛlədiː gaɹ'doʊ ] (* 2. February 1985 in New Jersey ) is an American jazz - singer-songwriter .

life and career

Melody Gardot first played the piano and performed as a singer in nightclubs in the Philadelphia area as a teenager , where she studied fashion design at Community College . After a traffic accident in November 2003, in which she suffered head and spine injuries and a multiple pelvic fracture, she was only able to play to a limited extent. She was on her bike when she was hit by the driver of an SUV who disregarded her right of way and then hit a hit. Gardot spent a long time in the hospital, became interested in jazz singing as part of music therapy , and learned to play the guitar. She can only sit to a limited extent; on tours she uses a special chair or sings standing and uses an electronic pain control, a TENS . Due to the consequences of the accident, she developed a sensitivity to noise and light, which is why she wears darkened glasses. She has also had to rely on a walking stick since the accident, but has been able to walk without it since 2015.

The EP Some Lessons emerged from the songs he had written in the hospital and in 2005 Gardot appeared again. 2006 her first published CD - album Worrisome Heart in which she is accompanied by Jef Lee Johnson (guitar), Joel Bryant (keyboards) and Matt Cappy (trumpet), and that also includes the pieces Wicked Ride and Some Lessons find their EP . It was re-released on Verve in 2007 . In 2009 her album My One And Only Thrill was released by Universal , arranged by Vince Mendoza .

Gardot writes and composes many of her own songs and is inspired not only by jazz but also by folk and pop , so that she has already been compared to Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell in the critics . At live concerts it becomes clear that she is musically rooted in jazz; the albums, on the other hand, are more pop-oriented.

Gardot also appeared on the album Rio by Till Brönner (2008).

In early 2009, Gardot received an Echo nomination for Worrisome Heart and the album reached number 2 in the US jazz charts .

In 2010 Gardot was awarded the Echo Jazz in the category Singer of the Year internationally . The award was presented to her on September 24, 2010 in Berlin after her concert in the Admiralspalast , as she was unable to attend the official award ceremony in May.
