António José Rodeia Zambujo (born September 19, 1975 in Beja ) is a Portuguese singer, composer and guitarist and u. a. a fado performer .

biography

He grew up with the “ Cante Alentejano ”. This tradition of polyphonic chant, which is deeply rooted in the folk culture of the Alentejo and strongly influenced it, was declared an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2014 . At the age of eight he began studying clarinet at the Baixo Alentejo Regional Music Conservatory. He had started singing with his family and friends at an early age and fell in love with Fado at a young age. His references include a. Amália Rodrigues , Maria Teresa de Noronha , Alfredo Marceneiro and João Ferreira Rosa . At the age of 16 he wins a local fado competition. After completing his clarinet studies, Zambujo moves to Lisbon .

Mário Pacheco , the well-known Portuguese guitarist and composer, accepts him into his ensemble. Zambujo performs in the renowned “ Clube de Fado ” in the Alfama district of Lisbon. In the musical "Amália" by Filipe La Féria he plays the role of Francisco Cruz (Amália's first husband) and thus becomes a crowd favorite. The show will be presented in Lisbon for four years and then toured throughout Portugal.

In 2002 he released his debut album 'O mesmo Fado', which is musically strongly influenced by the traditions of his home region of Alentejo. Some of the fados on the album are Zambujo's own compositions. For others, well-known poets from the world of Fado, such as José Luís Gordo and Mário Rainho, write the lyrics. In the same year the song "O mesmo Fado" made Zambujo well known. Radio Nova FM has awarded him the prize for the “best new Fado voice in Portugal”, which has already been given to singers such as Mariza , Camané and Mafalda Arnauth .

In 2004 Zambujo began his international career with concerts in Toronto, Paris, Santander, Sarajevo and Zagreb. He releases his second album 'Por meu cante', which also reveals his Alentejan roots. So Zambujo sings there u. a. also songs from his homeland and links them with fado. Musicians like Paulo Parreira ( Portuguese guitar ) and Ricardo Cruz ( double bass ) accompany him on this recording .

In 2006 he received the Amália Rodrigues Prize (awarded by the Amália Rodrigues Foundation) in the category “Best Male Fado Singer”. In September 2007 his third album 'Outro Sentido' will be released, which was created in collaboration with The Bulgarian Voices - Angelite . On 'Outro Sentido' António Zambujo interprets Fado again, albeit in a very unique way, and thus opens up completely new ways for his music. This is followed by the albums 'Guia' in 2010 and 'Quinto' in 2012, in which he further developed his style. António Zambujo also interprets songs by the Brazilian singer and songwriter Caetano Veloso , whom he admires . In the meantime António Zambujo appears at countless festivals in Portugal and abroad and celebrates great success with his own band.
