Marisa dos Reis Nunes (born December 16, 1973 in Lourenço Marques , Mozambique ) is the maiden name of the Portuguese Fado singer Mariza . She is one of the world's most successful artists in this genre.

biography

Mariza's father is Portuguese and her mother is from Mozambique. The song Transparente is a souvenir of her African grandmother.

The family moved to Portugal from the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique in 1976 when Mariza was three years old . There she grew up in Arouca and, when she was five, sang fados for the neighbors and in her father's restaurant (the lyrics of which she could remember with the help of cartoons that her father drew for her). When Mariza left childhood behind, she performed with Brazilian music , gospel , jazz and soul . Only now and then was there a fado in their program. The Portuguese actor Raul Solnado liked the singing so much that he invited Mariza to a concert in Canada . There she rediscovered fado for herself.

In Portugal, Mariza became known at two galas in honor of the famous fado singer Amália Rodrigues . She was named the best fado voice of 2000 .

In 2003 she received the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music in the category Best European Artist in World Music for her album Fado em mim . In 2007 her album Concerto em Lisboa was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category Best Folk Album . In 2007 she appeared in Fados , a music and dance film by Spanish director Carlos Saura .

On her 2008 album Terra she worked a. a. with Dominic Miller , Chucho Valdés and Tito Paris .

In May 2018 Mariza performed the song Barco Negro based on Ana Moura in the opening program at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon.
