Fados is a music and dance film by the Spanish director Carlos Saura from 2007.

After Flamenco (1995) and Tango (1998), Fados is the last part of Carlos Saura's film trilogy, which deals with urban songs of the 20th century. The premiere took place in October 2007 in New York .

The film is about the Portuguese music of Fado . He tries to approach the incomprehensible Saudade , the melancholy and the Weltschmerz of the Portuguese soul. The focus is on the relationship between fado and the city of Lisbon . In addition, he goes into the history of Fado with its possibly African and Brazilian roots - in some very free interpretations . Historical fado pieces are just as much a part of the film as very modern and free adaptations.

The most famous Portuguese-speaking singers ( fadistas ) and guitarists ( guitarristas ) appear in the film, with the Portuguese guitar playing a central role. Mário Pacheco accompanies the young singer Cuca Roseta alone when she portrays the archetypal fadista Maria Severa . Deceased greats of Fado such as Amália Rodrigues are honored with historical film clips . The music is complemented by choreographies by Patrick de Bana and Pedro Goucha Gomes (although Fado is actually music without dance).

The film has no narrator. He tells his story exclusively through music and dance.

Almost the entire film was shot in a studio with partly minimalist backdrops. Overlays of Lisbon by Eduardo Serra and archive footage from the time of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal bring the city to life. The final sequence takes place in the famous Casa do Fado e da Guitarra Portuguesa , the Fado Museum in Lisbon's Alfama .
