Lura (born July 31, 1975 in Lisbon ), actually Maria de Lurdes Pina Assunção , is a singer and composer .

She sees herself as a Cape Verdean artist, although she was born in Portugal - the daughter of Cape Verdean parents, her father comes from the island of Santiago , her mother from São Nicolau .

Life

Lura originally wanted to become a dancer or swimming instructor, but the foundation stone for her career as a singer was laid at the age of seventeen when Juka  - an artist from São Tomé and Príncipe  - asked her to sing a duet with him for an album which became a great success. She then took part in productions with musicians such as Bonga , Tito Paris , Paulo Flores and Paulinho Vieira . In 1996 she recorded her first CD Nha Vida with her own compositions. In 1997 she took part in the joint project Red Hot + Lisbon , involved in a campaign against AIDS by the Red Hot Organization , alongside other famous artists such as Caetano Veloso , Marisa Monte , Djavan , Bonga and Tereza Salgueiro . Further CD productions and tours across Europe followed. In the film Fados by Carlos Saura Lura sang the piece Morna . Lura is currently one of the most popular musicians in Cape Verde.

In 2006 Lura received the " BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music " in the " Newcomer " category for her album " Di Korpu Ku Alma ".

Lura's compositions are based on traditional Cape Verdean music such as Morna , Funaná and Batuku , mixed with African and modern influences.
