Camane ; actually Carlos Manuel Moutinho Paiva dos Santos Duarte (born December 20, 1966 in Oeiras ) is a Portuguese fado singer. He is one of the most famous male fadistas of the new generation. His younger brothers Hélder Moutinho and Pedro Moutinho are also fadistas.

Career

Until 1994

Camané started his musical career as a child in 1979, after winning the “Grande Noite do Fado” ( German : Big Night of Fado). In 1979 he recorded his first album and 4 singles produced by António Chainho . This was followed by appearances in various clubs and fado bars.

Due to the broken voice and his repertoire, which was more tailored to a child, Camané did not sing in public for a long time until friends persuaded him to do it again in 1984 after another studio recording ( A Alma Jovem do Fado , Die Junge Seele des Fados; 1982) singing Fadohäusern as the Sr.Vinho , the Faia or the Fado Menor u. a. There were also television appearances, but it was his participation in the musical theater productions under Filipe la Féria , such as Grande noite , Maldita cocaína or Cabaret (1993, 1994), and then above all his appearances with the Noites da Fado , the von his future wife Aldina Duarte produced Fado Nights at the Teatro da Comuna (1994–1995), which made him better known. Here he also met the well-known songwriter José Mário Branco , who produced all of his later albums.

In 1994, Lisbon was European Capital of Culture and Camané performed with Carlos do Carmo , the grand master of modern fado. He already knew him from his appearances as a little boy in Faia , the fado bar of the Carlos do Carmos family (his mother was the Fadista Lucília do Carmo ). Carlos do Carmo was impressed by the adult Camané and encouraged him.

Since 1995

In 1995 Camané's first new album, Uma noite de Fado (One Fado Night) was released, and he also began performing in other European countries. He produced his first video clips for television, and the restrained design of clips, record covers and posters became a trademark from then on.

With his appearance at the World Exhibition in 1998 in Lisbon he then attracted more attention and subsequently sang at festivals in Rennes and Paris . At the same time his album Na linha da vida (On the line of life) was released in Holland and Belgium, accompanied by concerts there. At the end of 1998 he took part in the celebration of the 35th stage anniversary of Carlos do Carmo.

The following year Na linha da vida was released in South Korea, and his tours took Camané to the Portuguese possession of Macau that year, which was returned to China by Portugal at the end of the year.

In 2000 his album Esta coisa da alma (This Thing with the Soul) was released simultaneously in Portugal (where he got a silver record) and Benelux , accompanied by concerts, including two sold out nights at the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) and a performance at the Bruges Festival .

The next year he published Pelo dia dentro (Into the Day), which achieved silver status in Portugal within 3 weeks.

In 2002 he took part in numerous concerts in Benelux, in particular at an event in the Palais des beaux arts in Brussels around the work of Fernando Pessoa .

In 2003 a compilation of Camané songs appeared in the EMI's Hemisphere World Music Catalog under the title The art of Camané , and his first live CD Camané - como semper ... como dantes (Camané - as always ... as before), for which he received gold .

Together with various renowned musicians from the Portuguese rock and pop scene, he started the tribute project " Humanos " the next year , which was dedicated to the work of the pop musician António Variações with new interpretations. The following year 2005 was marked for him by the successful Humanos project, in addition to his own concerts, for example in Canada or in Paris at the Festival d'Île de France. He also won the Amália Rodrigues Prize for Best Male Fado Singer.

Camanés first DVD (live at Teatro São Luiz in Lisbon) was released in 2006, and he earned applause at two concerts at the Book Fair in Turin (the "Fiera International del libro") and his concert at the Helsinki Festival. At the end of the Lisbon city festivals ( Festas de Santo António , festival of the city patron , Anthony of Padua from Lisbon) Camané then performed with Carlos do Carmo at the Torre de Belém in front of 20,000 people.

In 2007 Camané sang with the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra in the S.Luiz Theater and interpreted songs by Brel , Jobim , Sinatra and others. In April of that year he released his album Semper de mim (Always from me), which entered the Portuguese sales charts at number 1 for 3 weeks and reached gold status. In the following year he appeared in Seville at the Womex , the world's largest world music fair.

His two evenings at the renowned Centro Cultural de Belém in 2009 were sold out, and his concert in Lisbon's Coliseu dos Recreios was subsequently released on DVD. His concert tours that year have taken him to Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland. In the same year, Do amor e dos dias (Of love and days) was published. The album also went straight to number 1 on the hit parade in Portugal, where it again achieved gold status. The concert for the presentation, again in the “Centro Cultural de Belém”, was also sold out again.

His US debut in 2011 also received acclaim, and his concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music received praise from the New York Times .

In 2014, Fado Camané was a documentary about Camané, also by director Bruno de Almeida.

reception

Camané was one of the first representatives of an innovative “new generation” of fadistas, celebrated by the media and by Fado fans alike. His distinctive voice, his repertoire and his convincing yet reserved demeanor made him the popular fadista that he is. He succeeded u. a. to participate in two pieces of the popular punk rock / rock band Xutos & Pontapés and on the 2003 album of the old master songwriter Sérgio Godinho , while always remaining a pure Fado singer.
