José Mário Branco
José Mário Branco (born May 25, 1942 in Porto ; † November 19, 2019 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese musician, actor, producer and composer (see singer-songwriter ).
Life
He grew up as the son of a school teacher in Porto and studied history at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra of the University of Coimbra . As a singer of system-critical songs during the Estado Novo , he was persecuted by the PIDE and went into exile in France in 1963 . He worked with José Afonso , Sérgio Godinho , Luís Represas , Fausto and Camané and others at concerts or on albums as a singer, but also as a composer and was responsible for musical arrangements. He composed and sang for theater, film and television. In 1974 he returned to Portugal and founded the group GAC - Grupo de Acção Cultural , with which two albums were released.
His best-known recordings under the styles of protest song , fado and similar are Ser Solidário , Margem de Certa Maneira , A noite and FMI (FMI stands for Fundo Monetário Internacional , the International Monetary Fund ), which describes the Portuguese revolutionary movement with its dreams and disappointments. The latter was banned by him for reproduction on radio, TV and other types of public broadcasting. Despite the ban, FMI is probably his best-known work. His last album, which was released in 2004, is titled Resistir é Vencer (English: Resistance is Victory ) in honor of the people of East Timor , who have endured the decades of occupation by the Indonesian army since the Carnation Revolution . Socialist ideology is expressed in many of his texts.
2006, at age 64, José Mário Branco began a licentiate of linguistics at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa of the University of Lisbon . He finished the first year with an average of 19.1 and was considered the best student on the course. He disregarded the honor he received and said that it was normal in an academic career.
In 2009 he gave two concerts with Sérgio Godinho and Fausto entitled Três Cantos (English: three singers ).
José Mário Branco died of a stroke in Lisbon at the age of 77.
