A Noite ( The Evening ) was a popular Brazilian newspaper in Rio de Janeiro . It appeared with a few interruptions and several owners from July 18, 1911 to December 27, 1957 and from December 20, 1960 to August 31, 1964 when it was finally discontinued. The editorial office was located on Praça Mauá in the Saúde districtin the historic center of the city.

The paper was opened by Irineu Marinho in 1911 as an evening paper , peppered with police news, pictures and large circulation after he and thirteen other employees had left the Gazeta de Notícias newspaper because of political disagreements. The newspaper quickly became the favorite reading of the Cariocas .

A Noite had defined itself from the start as a kind of political opposition, and was himself an avowed sharp critic of the then newly formed government of Hermes Rodrigues da Fonseca (1910–1914). A Noite supported a civil group around Ruy Barbosa as a candidate for President of the Republic . In a later phase, the sheet left the opposition and henceforth supported the government of Washington Luís and subsequent governments.

A Noite was one of the first popular newspapers in Rio de Janeiro with a low retail price.
