Hélder Costa , full name Hélder Wander Sousa de Azevedo e Costa (born January 12, 1994 in Luanda , Angola ), is a Portuguese football player .

Career

In the club

Costa played from 2004 for the youth teams of Benfica Lisbon . On August 11, 2012 he made his debut for the B-team of the club in the Segunda League . On January 25, 2014, he came in the third round of the League Cup as a substitute for his first appearance for the professionals. On November 5, 2014, he scored his first hat trick in professional football in the second division match against SC Olhanense . In January 2015, Costa was loaned to the Spanish first division club Deportivo La Coruña until the end of the season. For the Galicians he came as a substitute to six first division appearances. In July 2015, another loan deal took him to the French first division club AS Monaco for one year . For the Monegasque, he scored his first first division goal on November 8, 2015 against Girondins Bordeaux .

In July 2016, Costa moved again on loan to the English second division club Wolverhampton Wanderers . In January 2017 he was signed by the Wolves for a then-internal record transfer fee of 13 million pounds sterling . At the end of the season he celebrated promotion to the Premier League with Wolverhampton as champions . For the 2019/20 season he was loaned from Leeds United and also helped the club to rise to the Premier League.

In the national team

Costa went through all of the Portuguese junior national teams. With the U19 selection , he took part in the 2013 European Championship . In October 2018 he was appointed to the senior national team for the first time by national coach Fernando Santos . He then made his international debut in the friendly against Scotland on October 14, 2018 and immediately scored his first international goal.
