Illan Stéphane Meslier (born March 2, 2000 in Lorient ) is a French football goalkeeper who is under contract with the English first division club Leeds United . He has been the French U20 international since March 2019 .

Career

society

Born in Lorient , western France , Illan Meslier began his football training as a football goalkeeper at ES Merlevenez before joining the youth department of FC Lorient in 2009 . There he rose in various age groups and developed into one of the greatest talents in the country. In the 2017/18 season he stood for the first time for the reserve team in the fourth-class Championnat National 2 between the posts. On February 1, 2018, he signed his first professional contract with the Merlus . He played a total of 16 league games this season.

For the following season 2018/19 he was promoted to the first team. On August 14, 2018, he made his debut in the men's team in a 1-0 league cup win against Valenciennes FC . In the league he was initially planned by head coach Mickaël Landreau as a substitute goalkeeper behind Danijel Petković , but ousted him for good in November 2018. Until the end of the season he was then used in all league games and ended the season with 28 league appearances, in which he was able to convince despite his young age.

On August 8, 2019, Illan Meslier moved on loan for the entire 2019/20 season to English second division club Leeds United , who also secured a purchase option. He started the season as a substitute goalkeeper behind the number one Kiko Casilla and competed with the young Kamil Miazek for a place on the bench. In addition, he was in action for the U23 team and received there for the first time in December 2019 as a penalty killer, because he was able to parry three penalty kicks. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa made his debut in the FA Cup match against Arsenal on January 6, 2020 . He was praised for his excellent performance after the game, but could not prevent the 0-1 away defeat. On February 29, 2020 (36th matchday), he made his league debut in a 4-0 away win against Hull City . As a result, he was used regularly, rose with the team in the Premier League and ended the season with 10 league appearances.

On July 23, 2020, it was announced that Leeds United had drawn their purchase option and provided Meslier with a three-year contract.

National team

Between February 2018 and April 2018, Illan Meslier made three international matches for the French U18 national team . At the same time, he started playing for the U19s and played five games for this age group by November 2018. He has been working for the U20s since March 2019 . With this selection he took part in the 2019 U20 World Cup in Ukraine , where he guarded the gate in two games.
