Ayling is considered a versatile player. He mainly occupies the position of right full-back on the field of play, but can also fill the positions of center-back, outside center felder and defensive midfielder.

After he went through the youth academy of Arsenal FC , but was not used for the professionals, he moved to Yeovil Town in a loan shop in March 2010 . This committed him to the end of the season and he played there for four years. After a two-year stay with Bristol City , he finally moved to his current club Leeds United in 2016.

He was an important part of the Arsenal team, which won the Premier Academy League and the FA Youth Cup , the double in the 2008/09 season. He and Bartley formed an almost insurmountable defense. After the successful season he was rewarded with his first professional contract. In the UEFA Champions League game against Olympiacos on December 9, 2009, he was appointed to the first-team squad for the first and only time. In the 0-1 away defeat, he was ultimately not substituted on. Ayling only made three appearances in the season with the reserve team, so his future with the Gunners was uncertain.

Yeovil Town

In March 2010, Luke Ayling moved to the Football League One club Yeovil Town for a month in a loan deal . On April 2, 2010, he made his debut in professional football when he came in the 0-0 draw against Southend United in the closing stages for Keiran Murtagh . On April 14, 2010, Ayling's loan contract was extended to the end of the 2009/10 season. In the 0-1 defeat in the last game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion , he was the first time in the starting lineup of the Glovers . During his loan, he came on four appearances for Yeovil.

Ayling finally left Arsenal in June 2010 after his contract expired. On June 30, 2010, Ayling signed a permanent contract with Yeovil Town. He made his debut on August 7, 2010 in a 2-1 home win over Leyton Orient . In his first season 2010/11 he came on 39 missions in which he collected eleven yellow and two yellow-red cards.

The relegation concerns of the Somerset club continued in the following season 2011/12 , in which Ayling only missed two of the 44 league games. On January 21, 2012, he prepared both goals for his team in the 3-2 defeat by Bury . This season, Yeovil placed 17th.
