Eunan Charles O'Kane (born July 10, 1990 in Derry , Northern Ireland ) is an Irish national football player who has played for the Republic of Ireland since 2016 . He previously played for several Northern Irish junior teams. He was under contract with AFC Bournemouth between 2012 and 2016 , with whom he was promoted to the second division in 2013 and the Premier League in 2015 .

Club career

O'Kane started playing soccer at the Maiden City Soccer Academy. In 2007 he moved to Everton FC and in 2009 to the Northern Irish club Coleraine FC , which had to play seventh in the relegation playoffs after 33 games in the IFA Premiership 2009/10 , but was the best team there to prevent relegation. O'Kane was used in 13 games at the start of the season and then moved to the English fourth division Torquay United . In England he came to 16 missions in his first half season. In the second season he came to 48 missions and with the club in seventh place in the promotion playoffs. Here they failed in the final at Stevenage FC . In 2011/12 they reached the promotion playoffs again as fifth, but then failed in the semifinals at Cheltenham Town .

O'Kane then moved to the English third division AFC Bournemouth , for whom he only played 37 league games, but rose as a runner-up in the second division . In their first season they reached a midfield position, in 2014/15 they were promoted to the Premier League as champions . There they were able to avoid relegation back to the 2nd division as 16th. O'Kane came in the last two seasons, however, only to eleven and 16 league appearances. In the FA Cup 2015/16 he failed with Bournemouth in the fifth main round at league rivals FC Everton and in the league cup in the round of 16 at Liverpool FC , where he sat on the bench. For the 2016/2017 season he moved to the second division Leeds United , where he made 56 league games in two seasons. In August 2018 he was awarded to the third division club Luton Town , but only made three appearances there, as he broke his leg twice in the game against Bristol Rovers on September 15 .

National team

O'Kane went through the Northern Irish junior teams up to the U-21 and played u. a. in September 2008 in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2009 against Germany , where he met the later U-21 European and world champions Mats Hummels , Toni Kroos , Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil . In 2011 he decided to play for the Republic of Ireland in the future. In 2012 he played the last four games for the Irish U-21s in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2013 . After a 1-0 defeat against Turkey in the penultimate game, the Irish had no chance to qualify. In the last game, however, they were able to cause group winners Italy the only defeat.

In September 2015 he was appointed to the provisional squad of 40 players for the European Championship qualifiers against Germany and Poland . He kept his place in the squad even when it was reduced to 27 players. When the Irish won their first competitive game against Germany on October 8, he was on the bench. In the following games, in which Ireland qualified for the European Championship finals, he was then not considered. Only then did he play a half-hour game on March 25 in a 1-0 friendly against Switzerland . Four days later he was in the starting XI against Slovakia , but was replaced after 67 minutes.

On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by national coach Martin O'Neill in the provisional 35-player squad for the EM . He was then used in two test matches but ultimately not taken into account for the European Championship finals.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the European Championship , he only had a four-minute short stint in the 3-1 victory in the Republic of Moldova . Second behind Serbia , the Irish qualified for the play-offs of the best runners-up in the group. Here they met the Danes . After a goalless draw in Denmark, they lost the home game 5-1. But in 2017 he only had two shorter appearances in friendly matches.
