After attending school, Jochen Helbig was drafted into the Wehrmacht at the age of seventeen and had to take part in the Second World War. He then took up an apprenticeship as a bricklayer before studying architecture at the Dresden University of Technology from 1949 to 1955 . After completing his studies, he worked for some time as a freelancer at the Institute for Monument Preservation in Dresden.

In 1955 Jochen Helbig took over the position at the council of the Calau district in preparation for the creation of the open-air museum Lehde , which was supposed to preserve the folk architecture and rural culture of the Spreewald and was created at the suggestion of the Institute for the Preservation of Monuments. At the end of 1956, Helbig returned to Dresden, where he worked for the next few decades as a scientific assistant at the Technical University at the chair for rural construction and later as a senior assistant. In 1970 he received his doctorate in Dresden with the dissertation Das Spreewalddorf Lehde. A contribution to the preservation of rural cultural monuments .

In 1965 he was employed at the Institute for Monument Preservation under Hans Nadler . There he dedicated himself specifically to folk architecture. He was also involved as a consultant in the development and expansion of the Blankenhain Agricultural Museum and the Markersdorf Village Museum.

His talent for drawing benefited him in his work. He decorated his work diaries with countless drawings. Many of his drawings were incorporated into the multi-volume GDR architecture guide.

From February 25 to March 4, 1994, he gave the exhibition Jochen Helbig - Watercolors and Drawings , which was created in collaboration with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Saxony , at the Representation of the Free State of Saxony at the federal government in Bonn .

He has devoted almost his entire working life to the preservation of Saxon cultural landscapes.
