Gil Vicente

Gil Vicente (* around 1465, † 1536 ) was a Portuguese playwright whose origin is unclear. He is considered the founder of the national theater and one of the outstanding writers of the Portuguese language. His extensive work includes 46 plays, 16 of which are in Portuguese, 11 in Castilian (Spanish) and the remaining 19 in both languages.

He is considered a deep thinker as well as a vicious satirist . His work is a rich source for the study of the Portuguese language, contemporary customs and the social life of the era.

Much about the real person of Gil Vicente is still unexplained and will probably remain so forever. So it is not certain whether the writer and the well-known goldsmith of the same name were one and the same person. The masterpiece of the latter is the famous monstrance of the Jeronimos Monastery in Belém ( Lisbon ).

The writer's daughter, Paula, made a contribution to the structure of his work, the first complete compilation of which did not appear until 1562.
