Rita Azevedo Gomes (* 1952 in Lisbon , Portugal ) is a Portuguese film director , screenwriter and film editor . She is the country's most important female auteur filmmaker .

Live and act

Rita Azevedo Gomes was born in Lisbon. Her films are based on those of the great master of Portuguese cinema, Manoel de Oliveira .

She made her first film in 1990; Her repertoire includes feature films and documentaries, she also writes screenplays and has some of its own films cut . Occasionally she also appeared as a producer , actress and costume designer .

The most important national and international actors who shot with her include Ingrid Caven , Luís Miguel Cintra , Leonor Baldaque .

She is the program director of the Cinemateca Portuguesa , the Portuguese national film museum and film institute.

In 2018 her most famous and most important film with strong references to Germany was made. Based on the story Die Portugiesin (1924) by Robert Musil , the film of the same name was made, using texts from the adaptation by the writer Agustina Bessa-Luís .

The Fassbinder actress Ingrid Caven was hired on the German side. The film is about a young Portuguese woman who was brought to Italy in the 16th century by a German knight and is not happy there. The film was also shown at the Berlinale 2018. In the film u. a. also read poems by Walter von der Vogelweide in German.
