Agustina Bessa-Luís
Agustina Bessa-Luís (born October 15, 1922 in Vila Meã , Northern Portugal , Amarante district ; † June 3, 2019 in Porto ) was a Portuguese writer . Alongside Lídia Jorge , she was the great female voice in contemporary Portuguese literature.
Life
Agustina Bessa-Luís was born in 1922 as the daughter of a Portuguese landowner from the rural area between Douro and Minho and a Spanish mother from Zamora . She lived in Porto from 1932 and moved to Coimbra in 1945 and married that same year. In 1950 she moved to Porto.
In 1948 she made her debut with the novella Mundo Fechado . Agustina Bessa-Luís is considered to be a representative of Portuguese neorealism and, in addition to novels and a kind of “fictional biography ”, has also devoted herself to plays. The subject matter of her novel Fanny Owen was also the basis for the Portuguese film Francisca by Manoel de Oliveira in 1979 .
In her works she dealt with the psyche and the social interaction between people and often took historical references to the history of Portugal as a starting point. The meticulous examination of the protagonists' psyche is characteristic of the way they are written. In doing so, she takes up fundamental conflicts of social coexistence and their historical contexts in a psychologically precise and realistic notation.
