occupation

The Love Birds is a Portuguese episodic film from the year 2007 by Bruno de Almeida . After the film had its world premiere on June 18, 2007, it was shown regularly in Portuguese cinemas on March 13, 2008.

action

Against the backdrop of the city of Lisbon , the film shows six stories running at the same time. They show different facets of interpersonal relationships: love, sadness, friendship, loneliness, passion and hope. A recently widowed American follows a woman he saw on the subway through the alleys of Alfama and ends up with her warm family. Two petty criminals share an unequal friendship. An aging director makes one last film about a boxer ( Fernando Lopes , alluding to his Belarmino ). An obsessive archaeologist (played by Sopranos actor John Ventimiglia ), an immigrant taxi driver with dramatic love affairs, and a cheating pilot are other characters.

reception

This independent film is also a declaration of love for the city of Lisbon, which is staged here with atmospheric images and precisely drawn characters from different angles. In the interplay of its vividly told, very differently structured episodes, the film develops a special atmosphere characterized by melancholy and happiness at the same time. The film theme, written by José Mário Branco , is sung by Fado singer Camané .

The Lovebirds won prizes at the Ourense Film Festival and the Fantasporto Festival in 2008 .
