John Ventimiglia (born July 17, 1963 in Queens , New York City , New York ) is an Italian-American actor , best known for his role as restaurant owner and chef Artie Bucco from the HBO series The Sopranos . Ventimiglia was born in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens, New York, and grew up in Teaneck , New Jersey . He graduated from Teaneck High School, where he played on the football team. Ventimiglia starred in films such as Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) opposite Hugh Grant and Cop Land (1997) opposite Sylvester Stallone before he was hired for The Sopranos . He also had guest appearances on US television series such as Law & Order and NYPD Blue .
