Bullets Over Broadway is a 1920s comedy directed by Woody Allen from 1994.

action

The so far rather unsuccessful playwright David Shayne would like to direct his new play "God of Our Fathers" himself. In order to get the money, he gets into a deal with mafia boss Nick Valenti. In return, he demands that his girlfriend Olive Neal get a role. Olive, who has so far only appeared as a revue dancer, soon turns out to be extremely untalented and causes some turbulence during rehearsals, as well as the obsession of actor Warner Purcell and the moods of the aging diva Helen Sinclair.

During rehearsals, Olive is always accompanied by her bodyguard Cheech, who is increasingly enthusiastic about the theater and proves to be a gifted author. David, who initially vehemently opposes any interference with his authority as an author and director, finally has to accept that his original version was “wooden and constructed” and allows Cheech to fundamentally change the play. David's willingness to compromise is also due to the fact that he succumbs to Helen Sinclair's charms, cheats on his girlfriend Ellen with her and consequently begins to orientate himself towards Helen's ideas regarding the piece.

Thanks to Cheech's changes, the play becomes a huge success with the public, but the latter is still dissatisfied with actress Olive ( “I won't let her screw up my play” ) and ultimately decides to murder her. His boss Nick Valenti suspects that Cheech is behind the murder of Olive and has him shot during a performance of "God of Our Fathers" on Broadway. The reviews are full of praise for the piece, which now features Olive's understudy, a "real actress". Finally, David confesses his infidelity to his friend Ellen; confesses to not being an artist and makes her a marriage proposal, which she accepts.

criticism

As usual with Woody Allen's comedies, it is a film full of strange characters, whose encounter creates plenty of comical scenes. According to the review overview page, Rotten Tomatoes , the film received 96% positive ratings.

  • film-dienst (August 1995 edition): Comedy set in the Roaring Twenties that logically brings together two apparently irreconcilable worlds, the bohemians of Broadway and the trigger-happy mob. An all-round successful film pleasure.
  • Fischer-Filmalmanach 1996: Perfect entertainment and non-stop laughter with witty themed and dialogue pranks. A somersault between film and comedy. A captivating carefree masterpiece.
