occupation

Magic in the Moonlight is an American comedy film directed by Woody Allen . The film, starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone, uses the magician motif known from previous Allen films such as Scoop , but this time it is linked to the existential theme of the godless universe that Allen mostly uses in his dramas (such as Match Point ). The film premiered on July 17, 2014 in the USA and was released in German cinemas on December 4, 2014.

action

In 1928, the celebrated magician Stanley Crawford was asked by his colleague Howard Burkan to unmask a swindler on the French Côte d'Azur : the young Sophie had won the trust of the Catledge family there and pretended to be in contact with the souls of the To be able to take in the deceased. Stanley, a sullen cynic who is completely arrested in this world, visits the family and quickly suspects Sophie of being a con man who wants to marry the family's son. However, his attempts to expose Sophie's tricks all fail. After all, he is convinced of her abilities and revokes his previous view of the world in front of the collected world press, and he has fallen in love with Sophie himself. When Stanley even prays to God in a personal crisis - his aunt Vanessa falls seriously ill - he realizes the tremendous dizziness he has been subjected to. With the help of his famous disappearance trick, which he usually uses on stage, Stanley exposes Sophie's charade (in which his friend Howard is involved, who envied Stanley his fame and therefore wanted to embarrass him in front of the world public), but has to admit that he is himself fell in love with the young impostor. After some hesitation, Sophie accepted Stanley's marriage proposal and his emotional balance was restored, but in the end he found a mystery to which he had to capitulate: the imponderables of love.

reception

After Allen's great successes, Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine , Magic in the Moonlight found only a muted response. The film could not build on the success of earlier Allen films commercially and only grossed 10 million US dollars in the USA. Critics rated the film more as a formal as well as substantive triviality, in which Allen rewarms his familiar worldview. Christian Buß called the film in Der Spiegel "the desperate work of a man who obviously no longer believes in the magic of cinema". The benevolent reviews also criticized the fact that you basically already know everything from older and better films by Allen. On the other hand, there was praise for the breathtaking landscapes by cameraman Darius Khondji and the main actors Emma Stone and Colin Firth. On the evaluation platform Rotten Tomatoes has Magic in the Moonlight an approval rating of 51 percent.

The film did not win any awards and instead made an inglorious mention at the annual EDA Awards of the female film journalists who “honored” Magic in the Moonlight for the most adventurous age difference in a portrayed man-woman relationship (Colin Firth is 28 years older as his co-actress Emma Stone).

In contrast, the German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden gave the film the rating of particularly valuable.
