Melinda and Melinda is a 2004 film directed by Woody Allen . It is a tragic comedy set in contemporary Manhattan .

action

The storyline of the film is formed by four authors who philosophize about the question of whether life is more tragic or funny . Starting from an opening scene, one of the writers, who specializes in tragedy, immediately begins to tragically continue the story, while a second writer, who specializes in comedies, incorporates the same fragments into a comedy. Both versions are shown alternately: Melinda bursts into a dinner party in Manhattan, completely dissolved. The hosts are an actor - eaten by ambition in tragedy, unemployed but lovable in comedy - and his wife - once a teacher, once a young director. In both versions the attempt is made to couple Melinda, both times she falls in love with a piano player, in both versions the couple's marriage breaks up. The tragedy ends with Melinda's attempt to commit suicide after the teacher has unhooked the piano player. In the comedy, Melinda and the actor fall in love and become a couple.

Reviews

  • Michael Wilmington wrote in the Chicago Tribune that Woody Allen would remain one of the great directors of comedies; The film is not as great as Der Stadtneurotiker or Manhattan . Melinda and Melinda are partly "classic" and "elegant". Wilmington praised the camera work.
  • Lexicon of international film : “The film cleverly interweaves the narrative strands and elegantly unfolds a game about love, suffering and passion. In view of the economic carelessness of the protagonists, it hardly goes beyond the scope of an entertaining sleight of hand. "
  • The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

Remarks

The comedy was shot in New York City . It grossed $ 3.8 million in US cinemas . In Italy 1.4 million euros were made, in Spain 3.2 million euros.

Radha Mitchell was offered the role of Woody Allen via cell phone. She thought it was a joke until she got the script sent to her.
