action

The interior designer Eve and the lawyer Arthur are a couple of advanced age. Their three daughters Flyn, Joey and Renata have outgrown their parents' home and lead their own lives. Arthur decides to temporarily separate from his wife in order to gain clarity in Greece about his further goals in life. The decision leads to the established family structures getting mixed up. Joey quits her job as an editor and is determined to have her unborn child aborted. Renata, who has family rivalries with Joey, gets into a marital crisis because her husband is dissatisfied with his work as a writer . The abandoned Eve tries to commit suicide, but it fails. Arthur reveals to his daughters that he wants to divorce Eve and that he wants to marry Pearl, a somewhat naive mid-sixties. Pearl is not accepted into the family by daughters Joey and Renata. Even so, Arthur marries her in the presence of his daughters. On the night of the wedding celebration, the tragedy happens : the abandoned Eve enters the house and speaks to Joey. Eve then disappears hastily and ends her life in the surf of the sea herself.

backgrounds

  • Woody Allen did not appear as an actor in this film for the first time, but was solely responsible for the script and direction .
  • Inner Life was Allen's first film after his great success Der Stadtneurotiker .
  • For many Allen followers, the film is problematic because it strictly excludes comedic elements and focuses on the deep structure of the characters and their interpersonal relationships.
  • Allen admitted in an interview with the Swedish filmmaker Stig Björkman that from today's perspective he would have designed the film differently in many parts.
  • The film dispenses almost entirely with film music . Rather, natural noises such as the noise of waves and wind play an important role. This, too, was a novelty in the filmmaker's work.
  • Inner life was nominated for five Academy Awards.
  • The Hamburg indie rock band Jullander named their 2003 album Interiors after the original title of the film and also goes into the story of the drama in the title track.
  • The indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie wrote a song called Death of an Interior Decorator (released in 2003 on the album Transatlanticism ) about the plot of the film.

Reviews

"Brilliant and oppressive family psychogram , terrific in the detailed work with the actors and also in the pictures."
