Gordon Willis

Gordon Willis (born May 28, 1931 in New York City , † May 18, 2014 in North Falmouth , Massachusetts ) was an American cameraman .

Life

Willis' father was a makeup artist for Warner Brothers . Gordon Willis spent a lot of time in New York cinemas when he was young. He began as a photographer and worked for twelve years, including during the Korean War , in the US Air Force in the camera department, where he mainly made educational and documentary films. Willis later worked as a cameraman for documentaries and advertising in New York City.

In 1970 he worked for the first time in a feature film as a cameraman. Between 1977 and 1985 he made a total of eight films with Woody Allen . His first and only directorial work was in 1980 the feature film "L" is not just love .

Most recently, he mainly shot commercials.

Awards

Gordon Willis was nominated twice for an Oscar for Best Cinematography , 1983 for Zelig and 1991 for The Godfather - Part III . At the beginning of September 2009 he was awarded the Oscar of Honor , which was presented to him on November 14 of the same year.
