The road to the abyss (Original title: End of the Road ) is an American film drama by Aram Avakian for the production company Allied Artists of 1970 with Stacy Keach , Harris Yulin , Dorothy Tristan and James Earl Jones in the lead roles. The film is based on the novel The End of the Road by John Barth .

Jacob Horner, a young intellectual who feels at a loss and overwhelmed before his appointment to a university, is met on a train station platform by Dr. D persuaded to seek treatment and taken to a bizarre asylum called "The Farm". There he gets deeper and deeper into the clutches of the psychiatric charlatan.

After being released as "cured" after many grueling procedures, Jacob finally takes up his job as an English lecturer at a nearby college and begins a fateful affair with Rennie Morgan, the wife of a colleague.

Horner is fighting desperately with his fears and his bad conscience. His fear of having to commit himself at some point leads to death for the woman through an abortion and an even deeper hopelessness for the man.

The set was designed by Jack Wright III, the costumes were provided by Catherine Gaudio, the set designer was John Mortensen, and the buildings were designed by Robert Hamlin. John Alese and Dean Newman were responsible as makeup artists. George Avakian was the musical director. Filming locations were in Great Barrington , Massachusetts , USA .
