Time of testing (AKA: The Paper Chase ) is an American movie from 1973. Directed by James Bridges playing Timothy Bottoms , Lindsay Wagner and John Houseman , the leading roles.

action

The law student James Hart comes to the renowned Harvard University, which is considered a springboard for top careers. In the very first lecture he met Professor Kingsfield, who was feared by his students because of his high performance requirements, but also for his caustic remarks, sottisen and bon mots. A little later he meets James Susan, the beautiful daughter of the professor. She herself has her difficulties with the rigid, highly intelligent, but hardly capable, professorial father. Over the years, the divorced child has come to terms with her father's aloof manner.

The tenderly developing love between James and Susan is especially good for James, who is intimidated and discouraged by Kingsfield's freezing, cold and mocking manner and his immensely high demands. Through their influence, the young man, plagued by self-doubt, begins to free himself from self-destructive performance thinking. Ultimately, this self-liberation even leads to better academic performance. One day, James even gets a hint of appreciation from his new girlfriend's relentless father.

criticism

Kay Wenigers The film's large personal dictionary called the time of the exams an “unpretentious law student story [...] with which Bridges demonstrated a sure hand for acting” and also praised Houseman's acting: “At 70, he was brilliant as a character interpreter: In the student story "Time of Exams", John Houseman gave an outstanding performance as the most serious, incorruptible and hyper-correct Harvard professor Charles Kingsfield - an achievement for which he was rewarded with a supporting role Oscar and which he won in the late 70s and went into (television) series in the 80s. "

The lexicon of international films called the film “a cautious chamber play” and summed up: “Despite some concessions, director Bridges can bypass the Hollywood colossal formulas and focus on social contexts. Outstanding acting. "

The Movie & Video Guide wrote: "Splendidly adapted by Bridges from the John Jay Osborn Jr. novel, with wonderful Gordon Willis photography and peerless acting, led by Houseman's Oscar winning performance in the role that made him a 'star'".
