Timothy James Bottoms (born August 30, 1951 in Santa Barbara , California ) is an American actor .

life and career

Timothy Bottoms is the oldest of four brothers who have all become actors: Joseph Bottoms (* 1954), Sam Bottoms (1955–2008) and Ben Bottoms (* 1960) also worked in the film business. Timothy Bottoms made his promising film debut in 1971, directed by Dalton Trumbo, in the anti-war film Johnny Goes to War . In the same year he played the leading role as Sonny Crawford in the cult film The Last Performance of Peter Bogdanovich in 1971. This role he represented in 1990 in the sequel to the film under the title Texasville , again directed by Peter Bogdanovich. After good reviews for his quite demanding portrayals in Johnny Goes to War and The Last Performance , Bottoms was considered an upcoming Hollywood star and played alongside John Houseman in 1973, among other things, during the trials . However, after a series of unfortunate film flops in the mid-1970s, Bottom's popularity soon waned.

Bottoms tried from then on in more experimental roles, such as a former prisoner in the movie Hunting Time in Texas (1976) and as Adam Trask in the television miniseries Jenseits von Eden based on the novel by John Steinbeck . In the 1980s and 1990s, Bottoms starred as the main and supporting actors in a large number of B-movies , without the old success returning. His external resemblance to the then US President George W. Bush brought him renewed attention , which is why he featured him in several films and the television series Here comes Bush! depicted. He was also seen as the alcoholic father of a family in Gus Van Sant's rampage drama Elephant (2003) and as the father of Hayden Panettiere in the film Shanghai Kiss (2007).

Bottoms has been married to Marcia Morehart for the second time since 1984. From this marriage he has three children and is also the father of one child from his first marriage.
